I am a Dunoon-based illustrator, who also works in animation and printmaking. I enjoy working both digitally and with physical media, often somewhere inbetween.
I graduated in Visual Communication from the Glasgow School of Art in 2003 and in Communication Art from the Royal College of Art in 2005 – training as an illustrator with a little bit of animation – and have worked as an illustrator ever since with clients like The Guardian, Mojo, Disney Pixar, GIPHY, Top Gear Magazine and things like that.
I found myself in London for a few years, then in Birmingham, before moving to Dunoon in 2017.
For work, I basically draw whatever I’m asked to for other people, so when I’m making my own work I tend to create images that make me laugh – which I appreciate might not be the case for other people.
There are two sides to my work – I have a very digital, pixel-based side, and a much more analogue, hand-made side. The pixel-based stuff is really more like a puzzle, where you are working out which squares you turn on and off in order to make an image look like you want. On the flip side you have the likes of silkscreen where you have to follow a definite process in order to make successful prints.
I think I enjoy working within constraints, and seeing how much you can do with comparatively little, whether that be a restricted colour palette or the literal physical dimensions of a piece.
For Cowal Open Studios, I will be displaying some works alongside a fellow Glasgow School of Art graduate, Stephanie Connelly – we hope to see you there.
