I’m a self-taught wood carver. On retiring from academia, as a geologist at the University of Glasgow, and moving to  the west coast, I’ve at last had time to pursue other passions, including saw dust and wood chip generation! …. As a by-product of this process, I make some representations of local (and a few examples of more exotic) wildlife in wood. The carving is by hand, much of the initial shaping with mallet and chisels. Most of the wood for the carving is locally sourced, some associated with invasive rhododendron clearance, but more typically using hardwoods. More recently I’ve “branched out” experimenting with acrylic painting and pyrography on polished wood. I take inspiration from the range of wildlife seen on land, and sea, whilst out kayaking on Holy loch. Happy to consider commissions, if they represent interesting projects, especially if you are able to provide me with a suitable bit wood that has a special significance to you.
