Frances is a landscape artist working mainly in acrylics and oils who enjoys the freedom of large scale pieces. Most of her work features sea- and skyscapes.
Frances Cox will be showing for the second year running at the Kames Hotel in Kames, Tighnabruaich with friend and fellow COS artist Janna Maxfield. Proprietor Irene and her team will be ready to serve you a refreshing beverage while you take a break in your artistic journey.
An ex-teacher who moved from Bristol to the Tighnabruaich area during lockdown in 2020, like any teacher Frances struggled to indulge her interests outside the job. As soon as she hung up her lanyard and deleted her school email address Frances set about pursuing all the passions which her working life denied her. She wrote a teaching book and a novel, went to a series of art courses in Bristol and joined a local amateur theatre company.
But it was making her home in the Cowal Peninsula which really led her to paint more seriously. How could anyone not be inspired by this sublime place? She joined a local art club and gradually began to create more and more, bigger and bigger pieces and find her visual language, completing a long course on landscape painting at the Glasgow School of Art Open Studio.
In 2025 Frances exhibited her work in a number of different venues in the Cowal peninsula and beyond. Pieces are currently showing in the Kames Hotel, Kames, Five West and Made in Kyles in Tighnabruaich, and Ahoy in Dunoon, in addition to regular presence in COS exhibitions.
