I live in Strachur and have my workshop in Dunoon Community Shed. I have been making and selling Woollyhatz in a variety of patterns for about 40 years.
For Cowal Open Studios I am sharing exhibition space with Anne Armstrong (textiles), Paddy Allen (artist), and Margy McNally (seaglass and driftwood art) in the atmospheric Holy Trinity Church.
Since starting my Woollyhatz business in 1984 I have designed, made and sold around 100,000 bobble hats which have appeared in around 150 retail outlets in Britain and have been exported all over the world. One was even in the movies – Peter O’Toole wore one in the movie ‘Venus’. More recently, Susan Calman wore a Nessie hat on her ‘Grand Day Out’ series and wore a specially-designed ‘Helen’ hat for series 2 and 3, which aired at the end of 2021.
I also hand crochet an original range of Woollyhatz and other accessories using fabulous shades of an acrylic/wool blend of yarn which combines warmth as well as being very soft to wear. The hats are made in a variety of original wacky designs and have proved to be very popular at craft fairs and in craft outlets.
My double thickness, 100% supersoft wool bobble hats come in a range of designs from traditional fairisle patterns, picture knits based on the landscapes of Scotland and a variety of Celtic designs. I also make a vegan-friendly range of reversible hats and infinity scarves and plain double thickness beanies in a wool/alpaca mix.
My work is available at my workshop (by appointment), through craft fairs, on my website and through Conic Crafts of Drymen.
