Sarah Sumsion: weaving in silks with hand dyed yarns, based on observed drawing
Sam MacPhee: Working with wire and natural materials to create different pieces.
Sarah Sumsion: I specialise in woven silk hangings for interiors both domestic and public and have undertaken major commissions. I have exhibited widely in mixed exhibitions and given lecture, workshops and demonstrations to many groups.
Drawing and colour are a very important part of my work. Observing forms and structures in the landscape is the starting point for a design idea. I dye all my own yards to obtain the variation and intensity of colour that I want using various techniques, such as ikat dyeing. These intricate processes and setting up of the loom can often take longer than the weaving itself. The original design changes at each stage which is an exciting element and enable me to take advantage of chance happenings.
