I just love Watercolours. They are absolutely fascinating and seem to have a life and mind of their own, they are a bit like life itself – unpredictable. I work wet on wet laying down various washes without any detail, to create the harmony of atmosphere. This process ripens the temptation to indulge the imagination with magical thoughts and colours. The west coast of Scotland is my inspiration, land and sea from Cowal to the Highlands and Islands. I love the warmth and excitement of nature and the soulfulness of location.
I do love my islands and many of my paintings are taken from my various visits to Arran, Tiree, Jura, Skye, Colonsay, Harris and Lewis and of course St Kilda. All these places hold a mystery about them, that captures your heart. My garden too provides me with lots of interesting material.
Cowal Open Studios annual September event is a fine opportunity to visit many artists during one long weekend. I am more than happy to welcome folks at any time of the year, just call before hand to make sure I am around. I run watercolour classes in the area from time to time, so if you would like to be on my alert list please let me know.
I also create hand-built one-off ceramics, which can range from secret boxes to wall hangings and whatever inspires me on the day, a song, a poem or just some quirky wee happening. I work organically which often allows the clay to inform me as to what shape and form things will take. Local beaches often gift me interesting handles for pots and boxes and bases for other work.
I exhibit paintings and ceramics at; Castle Gallery, Rothesay; Stables Gallery, Inveraray; Seagull Gallery, Gourock; Jetty gallery, Oban and in the annual PAI exhibition – Paisley.
